DR. CHRISTIE’S STORY
TRAUMA SURGEON

GUN SHOT WOUND TO THE HEAD
When you look at the face of one of the many young gunshot victims, most people would say that this person could be a model. This is my problem, I see this face and then I see the reality and it kills me. Forget the color, I see something beautiful, I see hope, the future, success, a contribution. Then I see the potential for this person to be cut off with nothing because society doesn’t see them that way.

SMASHED AWAY
I cannot sleep sometimes because this person is just like me. You can look at a face and come up with lofty goals for all of us, but then all of a sudden you put them in a community and all of it is smashed away. They become worthless and stepped on.
TOO MANY GONE
When I see the faces, I see me. I was their age once, I was as poor as them, and I grew up in the same neighborhood as them, but I got an opportunity. We lose so many. But why are we comfortable losing so many?
WE MUST FIX THIS
In 1986, I started my practice. Today, the same problems remains. I see too many gunshot victims and I have seen it for too long.
We say we are trying to fix things, but we are ignoring lives.
IN THE END
On my death bed I want to feel like I did enough for people.
